Zebra Blinds Inc is an Oshawa-based factory-direct seller of zebra shades, and because Oshawa is one of the areas we cover regularly, homeowners often ask us how the two of us differ. This is a straightforward comparison, not a takedown — they make a real product and plenty of people are happy ordering that way.

We are based in Pickering and work across the Greater Toronto Area, serving Durham Region, York Region and East Toronto. The honest difference between us comes down to how you buy: one person who measures, quotes and installs, versus ordering direct from a manufacturer and arranging the rest yourself.

Side-by-side comparison

The table below compares how each model works in practice. Details on any factory-direct seller can change, so treat the right column as the typical factory-direct pattern and confirm the current terms before you order.

Where factory-direct genuinely wins

If you are confident measuring your own windows, comfortable mounting hardware, and buying one or two straightforward shades, ordering direct is a sensible way to keep the total down. You are cutting out the install labour, and for a simple square bedroom window that labour is the main thing you are paying for anywhere.

It also suits replacements. If you already have a zebra shade in the same opening and you know the exact bracket-to-bracket width, reordering direct is quick and low-risk.

Where an owner-operated install wins

Whole-home jobs are the clear case. Ten or twelve windows measured by hand, in older homes where openings are rarely square, is where mistakes get expensive — a shade cut 6 mm too wide cannot be returned because it was made to your number. Measurement error is on the homeowner in a self-measure order, and on us in ours.

The other case is anything non-standard: patio doors, bay windows, arched openings, shallow condo recesses with a metal frame, or motorised shades that need a power plan. Those need someone standing in the room deciding on mount type and hardware.

And there is the after-sales question. A 5-year workmanship warranty matters most when a bracket loosens two winters from now — you message the same person who installed it, rather than opening a claim with a production facility.

What to compare before you decide

Ask both options for the same four things in writing and the decision usually makes itself: the total cost per window with installation included, the fabric name and openness factor, the mechanism brand and whether it is chain or motorised, and the warranty terms including who honours workmanship.

Our published installed ranges for zebra blinds are $180–$320 per standard window and $450–$900 motorised, with no measure fee and no travel fee anywhere in the GTA. Full ranges by product are on the installed pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is factory-direct cheaper than an installed quote?
For a simple window that you measure and mount yourself, usually yes — you are not paying for install labour. Once measuring, mounting and any hardware are added, the installed totals often land close together. Compare per-window totals with the same fabric spec.
Do you sell zebra blinds only?
No. Zebra blinds are our most requested product, but we also install roller shades, vertical blinds, motorised shades, drapery and shutters, so a whole-home job can be handled in one visit.
Do you serve Oshawa?
Yes. Oshawa is part of our regular Durham Region coverage, alongside Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Courtice and Bowmanville, and we also work through York Region and East Toronto.
What if I already have a quote from another company?
Send it over on WhatsApp. We will tell you plainly whether the fabric, mechanism and mount are comparable to what we would install, even if the answer is that their quote is the better deal.
Who honours the warranty?
The manufacturer covers fabric and mechanism defects. Workmanship — brackets, level, fit, operation — is covered by us for 5 years and handled by the person who did the installation.
